$2.8 MILLION FOR HOSPITAL EQUIPMENT IN MELBOURNE’S EAST

Wednesday, 01 September 2010
Families in Melbourne’s outer east will have access to even better maternity services as part of a $2.8 million Brumby Labor Government boost for new equipment at Eastern Health.

Visiting Angliss Hospital in Ferntree Gully today, Health Minister Daniel Andrews said the funding would be used to buy new state-of-the-art medical equipment at Angliss Hospital, Box Hill Hospital and Maroondah Hospital.

“The Brumby Labor Government is taking action to give Victorians a better health system by ensuring health services have the latest medical equipment to deliver the highest-quality care to patients,” Mr Andrews said.

“We are providing $379,100 for Angliss Hospital to buy two resuscitation cots, two infant incubators, a portable ultrasound unit and 44 infusion pumps.

“This equipment will mean the hospital can continue to provide top quality care to families, particularly mothers and babies, in the growing areas of Melbourne’s outer east.”

Mr Andrews said Box Hill Hospital would receive $1.35 million for new medical equipment in its surgical and heart services.

“Equipment to be replaced at Box Hill Hospital includes two operating tables, seven video cystoscope units, a video uretero-reno scope, a cardiac ultrasound system and an intraaortic balloon pump,” he said.

“Maroondah Hospital will receive $1.08 million to replace 10 intensive care unit beds, a transport ventilator, 19 infusion pumps and equipment in its central sterile supply department.”

Mr Andrews said the funding was part of the 2010/11 Targeted Equipment Program, which was delivering $35 million to ensure Victorian hospitals remained at the forefront of new technology with funding for state of the art medical equipment.

Mr Andrews said the funding followed the Brumby Labor Government’s $407.5 million redevelopment of Box Hill Hospital – the single largest suburban health infrastructure project in Victoria.

“The redevelopment includes a new, larger emergency department with 19 extra cubicles, a new intensive care unit, additional inpatient wards, six new operating theatres and four refurbished theatres,” he said.

“This redevelopment will deliver more than 100 extra beds, enabling about 7000 additional patients to be treated at the hospital each year.”
