$45 MILLION FRANKSTON HOSPITAL EXPANSION NEARS COMPLETION

From the Premier

Monday, 11 October 2010
The Victorian Government’s major $45 million redevelopment of Frankston Hospital is almost complete and set to treat even more patients.

In Frankston for Community Cabinet, Premier John Brumby, Health Minister Daniel Andrews and Member for Frankston Alistair Harkness inspected the redevelopment.

The completion of construction is expected in coming days with final work to commission the operating theatres to occur over coming months.

“We are committed to strengthening our health system by building new hospitals and hiring more doctors and nurses,” Mr Brumby said.

“Our $45 million investment to expand Frankston Hospital helps to ensure the community has access to even better health services and more patients can be treated faster.

“The expansion will enable the hospital to deliver even more elective surgery procedures for people living on the Peninsula.

“The redevelopment includes a major expansion and re-configuration of the operating theatre suite. Other facilities include a new 33-bed and 7-chair recovery suite, a new 13-bed Intensive Care Unit and new Cardiac Angiography facilities.

“A new pharmacy, new Health Information Services Unit and the refurbished Central Sterilising Services Department have already been completed and are in operation.”

The construction phase of the Frankston Hospital redevelopment created about 280 new jobs.

Mr Andrews said the project would enable Frankston Hospital to better meet current demand and future growth in elective surgery.

“The Brumby Labor Government has made a significant investment in Frankston Hospital since 1999 including Stage 1 of the Frankston Hospital redevelopment, the expansion of the radiology department and improvements to the emergency department,” Mr Andrews said.

“Stage 1, completed in 2002, included a new 60-bed adult ward, observation ward for the emergency department, new maternity facilities and a new 17-bed paediatric unit.”

Mr Harkness said the expansion would provide families in the Frankston area even better access to high-quality health care.

“All of these exciting projects are great examples of how the Brumby Government is committed to delivering additional health services to residents in Frankston and surrounding suburbs,” Mr Harkness said

Mr Andrews said on top of the $45 million redevelopment, the Government was funding an $8 million expansion of the Frankston Hospital maternity department.

“Through the historic health agreement reached in April with the Federal Government, Victoria secured more than $900 million from the Commonwealth and this will deliver additional investments for Frankston Hospital,” Mr Andrews said.

“In August, I announced Peninsula Health would receive $5 million to treat even more emergency patients and boost access to elective surgery at Frankston Hospital.

“The project will deliver 24 acute and short stay beds and a transit lounge at the hospital.

“Peninsula Health also received $25 million for an additional 30 sub-acute beds and a community rehabilitation centre at the Mornington Centre.”

The first patients in the new Frankston Hospital operating theatres will be treated in early 2011.
