‘ONE-STOP-SHOP’ FOR LATROBE VALLEY HEALTH SERVICES

From the Minister for Health

Wednesday, 27 October 2010
A new state-of-the-art home for the Latrobe Community Health Service is open for business, providing even better health services for Latrobe Valley residents.
Health Minister Daniel Andrews today officially opened the $21 million ‘one-stop-shop’ for community health services in Morwell.

“We are taking action to give Victorians a better health system by building new hospitals and hiring more doctors and nurses,” Mr Andrews said.

“That is why we delivered $21 million for a new community health service building in Morwell that brings together a range of health services under the one roof.”

Mr Andrews said the modern facility would provide services such as physiotherapy, counselling, dental care, district nursing, allied health and palliative care.

“The development will expand the provision of dental care and for training of dental students, with six new dental chairs,” he said.

“A 14-room consulting suite will provide a range of services including speech therapy, dietetics, family and children counselling, gambling, drug and alcohol counselling.

“The facility will be home to more than 120 staff, and the community will be able to access these services in a comfortable and welcoming environment.”

Member for Eastern Victoria Johan Scheffer said the new environmentally-friendly facility also incorporated many energy efficient features.

“Movement sensors will turn on lights and automatically turn them off when natural daylight levels are sufficient. Water saving is another major feature with the installation of two 110,000 litre underground rainwater tanks,” Mr Scheffer said.

“The project has also provided jobs in the local construction industry and has contributed to reinvigorating the Church Street precinct in Morwell.

“I commend Latrobe Community Health Service on its vision and hard work in developing this project, which will be an excellent base for the community health service for many years to come.”

The development consolidated services from two buildings into one facility on the existing Buckley Street site.

In 2009-10, Latrobe Community Health Service responded to an average of 2000 incoming referral calls each week and provided services to 15,302 clients, and had 89,860 client contacts.
