NEW $5 MILLION AFFORDABLE HOUSING IN COBURG Wednesday, 23 June 2010

Vulnerable Victorians can access high-quality, affordable housing in Coburg, thanks to a $5 million partnership between the Brumby Labor Government and Yarra Community Housing.

Housing Minister Richard Wynne today opened the new 24-unit development at Munro St, alongside tenants, Member for Pascoe Vale Christine Campbell and Yarra Community Housing representatives.

“The Brumby Labor Government believes every Victorian has the right to safe, secure and affordable accommodation,” Mr Wynne said.

“This project is an important part of our record commitment to social and public housing, which will improve the lives of the most vulnerable members of our community.

“By working in partnership with agencies such as Yarra Community Housing, we can deliver even better outcomes sooner.”

The Brumby Labor Government has invested $3.9 million towards the $5.4 million cost of the development, which was once the site of an aged-care hostel.

Yarra Community Housing has contributed $1.5 million towards the project.

Member for Pascoe Vale Christine Campbell said Yarra Community Housing had a proven record of providing quality housing that is resident focused.

“Those who had a negative perception of social housing and support services in their neighbourhood now realise that their past views were wrong," she said.

"We look forward to welcoming Yarra Community Housing's tenants to our neighbourhood."

Mr Wynne said the architecturally-designed building includes 20 one-bedroom units and four studio-style apartments, while all first floor rooms have private balconies.

“Features include a landscaped garden area with BBQ as well as a high-security electronic lock system for added privacy. There are also communal laundry facilities with high speed, water efficient, front-loading washing machines,” he said.

“The new apartments have a number of environmentally friendly features including hydronic heating, a central gas-boosted solar hot water system, sunshades over the windows.

“That’s a win for the environment and a win for the tenants through lower utility bills.”

Mr Wynne said the development was part of the Brumby Labor Government’s record $510 million investment in public and social housing, on top of the Rudd Labor Government’s $1.167 billion investment for Victoria.

“These record investments will deliver more than 6,500 new homes for vulnerable Victorians in the next couple of years,” he said.
