The Brumby Labor Government’s $407.5 million redevelopment of Box Hill Hospital will include a new state-of-the-art cancer ward to meet growing demand.
Touring the building site today with Member for Burwood Bob Stensholt and Member for Forest Hill Kirstie Marshall, Health Minister Daniel Andrews announced the inclusion of a new cancer inpatient ward and refurbishment of the existing day oncology services as part of the massive redevelopment.
“We are taking action to give Victorians a better health system by building new hospitals and hiring more doctors and nurses,” Mr Andrews said.
“It is important that cancer patients in Melbourne’s east can access the highest quality services close to home and family and that is why we have included a new cancer ward to the $407.5 million Box Hill Hospital redevelopment.”
Mr Andrews said the new ward would treat up to 32 patients in purpose-designed facilities to provide better and more comfortable care to cancer patients.
“About half of the new cancer ward will be single rooms,” he said.
“In addition to the new ward, the day oncology service will be expanded and refurbished, growing from 12 to 20 places with a potential to increase to 34 chairs in the future.”
Member for Forest Hill Kirstie Marshall said the $407.5 million redevelopment was the single largest suburban health infrastructure project in Victoria.
“The redevelopment includes a larger emergency department with 19 extra treatment spaces, an new intensive care unit, additional inpatient wards, six new operating theatres, and sub acute beds,” Ms Marshall said.
“This exciting redevelopment will deliver more than 100 extra beds, enabling about 7000 additional patients to be treated at the hospital each year.”
Mr Andrews said site preparations for the project were progressing well and recent works have included the construction of the structural steel for the new engineering workshops, offices and hospital medical officer’s quarters.
“The demolition of the services buildings is continuing and includes removal of the engineering workshops and internal strip-out of the Clive Ward Building,” he said.
“Scaffolding around the Clive Ward Building has been put up in readiness for the commencement of the demolition of this building in December.”
The project is expected to be completed in 2015.
