SKY’S THE LIMIT FOR $31 MILLION DOCKLANDS DEVELOPMENT Monday, 11 October 2010

Construction of an innovative development to boost affordable housing for lower and medium income-earners is taking shape in Melbourne’s Docklands precinct.

Joined by Member for Melbourne Bronwyn Pike, Housing Minister Richard Wynne today visited the Mariner, New Quay, to inspect progress on 85 affordable rental homes close to the heart of the CBD.

“This fantastic new development is part of the $1.26 billion Nation Building program which is bringing more than 4,500 new affordable rental homes to Victorians who need it most,” Mr Wynne said.

“We have also completed upgrades to more than 9,100 existing homes so that more residents can be housed in even better accommodation.

“The Mariner, New Quay, will ultimately provide 113 apartments over nine levels, 85 of which will be a mix of one and two-bedroom affordable rental apartments.

“Safe, comfortable, well-located and affordable homes are essential to creating a sense of place and community, and are important in providing stability.

“This is an outstanding example of how the Brumby Labor Government is working to transform the lives of vulnerable Victorians right across the state.”

Ms Pike said the development would give tenants a home in one of Melbourne’s prime real estate areas.

“The Docklands is a vibrant location with excellent access to employment opportunities, educational facilities, public transport, social support services and recreational facilities,” she said.

“This is an exciting development and further evidence of the Brumby Labor Government’s commitment to providing safe, affordable and comfortable housing for Victorians who need it most.”

The Mariner, New Quay, is a partnership between the Commonwealth and Victorian Governments, and the registered housing association Housing Choices Australia, which will manage the apartments. HCA contributed $8.4 million, with the remainder funded by the Brumby and Gillard Labor Governments.

“HCA is committed to providing a range of accommodation to people not served well by private housing markets – whether they are people with disabilities or working families priced out of locations which provide employment,” HCA chief executive Michael Lennon said.

Construction work on The Mariner, New Quay development started in April and is expected to be completed in April next year.
