From the Minister for Mental Health
Tuesday, 24 August 2010

Victorians with a mental illness living the Grampians region are set to receive better support with the opening of the Brumby Labor Government’s $5.5 million redeveloped Ballarat Health Service Mental Health Adult Acute Unit.

Officially opening the upgraded unit today Minister for Mental Health Lisa Neville said the renewed facility would increase the quality of care local residents receive and address growing demand for mental health services in the region.

“The Brumby Labor Government understands that Victorians are concerned about the mental health and wellbeing of their loved ones, that is why we are taking action to deliver the best possible mental health services and facilities to Victoria,” Ms Neville said.

“Thanks to our strong economic management we are able to deliver health infrastructure projects such as this to provide vital services to the community.

“We are working with clinicians, carers and patients to develop and deliver nation-leading policies that will ensure Victoria continues to lead the way in mental health reform.”

Member for Ballarat East Geoff Howard said the Brumby Labor Government would continue to work together with Ballarat Health Services deliver the services the community needs.

“The Government is committed to ensuring the Ballarat community and the greater Grampians Region has access to high-quality and modern health services,” Mr Howard said.

“The Ballarat Health Service Mental Health Adult Acute Unit will provide families and friends of those with a mental illness the reassurance there is a high quality facility in our region.”

Ms Neville said the new 23-bed unit had been completed on time and on budget.

“This new unit will provide specialist mental health services to people experiencing a serious mental illness in the Grampians Region in upgraded treatment rooms,” she said.

“It is now a contemporary, welcoming health care facility with an environment conducive to the best possible health outcomes for clients and their families.

“The redevelopment has 23 single bedrooms with ensuites providing those who stay there with greater privacy.

“Incorporating reflective courtyards and spacious indoor and outdoor areas is an important part of the new design of the unit.

“These spaces are important as they provide the clients and their families space to be together away from the treatment rooms.”
