HEALESVILLE HOSPITAL UPGRADE HELPS LOCAL RESIDENTS

Friday, 21 May 2010
Healesville Hospital will be better able to meet the needs of the local community thanks to a $3 million upgrade from the Brumby Labor Government.

Visiting the hospital today with local member Ben Hardman, Health Minister Daniel Andrews said the funding would help upgrade existing services and expand works to ensure the hospital continued to meet the needs of the local community.

“The proposed upgrades provide strong evidence of the Brumby Labor Government’s commitment to Healesville Hospital and Yarra Valley community,’’ Mr Andrews said.

“Healesville and District Hospital is an important local health facility that provides a range of services including obstetric, elective and aged care services.

“Our Government is committed to retaining Healesville Hospital and continuing services on the site.”

Mr Andrews said there had been changes in recent years in local demand for services, with an increasing need for ambulatory and same day health services.

The new upgrade includes expanding and consolidating the Yarra Valley Community Health Centre and a refurbishment to accommodate additional outpatient services, including ante and post-natal clinics, renal dialysis and mental health services.

In addition, a new car park will be built to improve staff and visitor access with other improvements to the switchboard, kitchen and patient rooms also to be undertaken.

“These important works will enable Eastern Health to provide a high quality and safe service that is even more responsive to community needs,” Mr Andrews said.

“This commitment is in addition to the $407.5 million redevelopment of Box Hill Hospital which, when completed, will give patients living in the east access to one of the State’s most technologically advanced and innovative tertiary hospitals.”

Member for Seymour Ben Hardman welcomed the investment, which is expected to create 20 jobs within the broader construction industry.

“This upgrade will ensure Healesville Hospital is best placed to meet the community into the future,” he said.

Construction is expected to start early next year.
